A muffler pad is the flexible hanger loop that carries the exhaust system under the floor: it takes the weight of the pipe, the resonator and the silencer and keeps engine vibration out of the body. The part has two mounting holes for the hooks or pins of the brackets, so it is chosen by shape, thickness and hole centre distance rather than by car model. PolyPro casts these pads from polyurethane in its own plant; the rest of the suspension and exhaust hardware sits in the catalogue.
A muffler pad works as an elastic joint between the exhaust system and the body. The pipe, the resonator and the silencer weigh several kilograms and are rigidly tied to the engine, which moves on its own mounts, so the exhaust travels along the axis of the car and swings sideways. A rigid link to the body would quickly destroy the brackets and the welded seams of the pipe, so an elastic element sits between them: it stretches under load and returns to its shape.
In shape it is a plate, a ring or a loop with two holes: one goes over the hook on the body bracket, the other over the pin welded to the pipe. In service it is loaded in tension by the weight of the system and takes impact peaks over bumps. On top of that it lives with exhaust heat, road salt and dirt, and it is this combination, not mileage, that sets its life. More exhaust mounts are in the exhaust rubber mount section.
A worn pad shows up as noise and as a shifted exhaust system, not only as visible cracks. The easiest check is over a pit, rocking the pipe by hand with the engine cold.
Pads sit at several points, so one torn part overloads the rest: they fail next, and after them the brackets and the welded joints of the pipe. That is why the mounts are usually replaced as a set along the whole length of the system.
Rubber is soft and damps vibration well, but it ages fast under exhaust heat, road chemicals and ozone: the material hardens, cracks and tears around the holes. Polyurethane has higher tear and abrasion resistance, is not softened by oil or de-icing salt and stays elastic longer, so the pad stretches less and the silencer keeps its position. This matters most where the gap between pipe and floor is small and any sag gives immediate contact.
The trade-off is how vibration is passed on: a firmer material absorbs small oscillations less, and at idle they can be felt in the cabin. Hardness is therefore matched to the job — a softer grade for everyday road use, a firmer one for loaded vehicles and heavy exhaust systems. The exact Shore value is stated in the product card of each item.
A pad is selected by geometry rather than by car model: matching mounting dimensions matter more than the model name. Remove the old part and check three groups of parameters.
The key figures are the distance between hole centres and the hole diameter: they decide whether the part sits on the standard hooks without tension and without sag. Measure the old pad unloaded, because stretched rubber gives an inflated reading; if it is torn, take the dimensions from the brackets on the body and the pipe. Then check plate thickness and body width, which decide whether the part passes through the bracket window. Look at the shape separately: a loop, a ring and a ribbed plate all install differently. Parts that look alike often differ in the height of the working section, so check every dimension rather than one.
Hardness is matched to the mass of the exhaust system and to how the car is used. For an ordinary road car with a standard silencer a softer grade is enough: it damps small vibration at idle better. For a heavy system, a commercial vehicle or regular towing a firmer grade makes sense, because it stretches less under load and holds the clearance to the body more consistently. If the car already booms at certain revs, extra hardness will underline it. For mixed use it is reasonable to start from a middle grade and watch how the system behaves after fitting. The Shore value is stated in each product card.
If the pad you need is not in the standard range — the part is out of production, the car is rare, or the exhaust has been rewelded onto custom brackets — it is made to order. A dimensioned drawing, a sample or even the worn part will do: the geometry and the hole centre distance are restored from it. Such items are produced from a single piece, including versions for reinforced brackets. The same route covers a car that runs pads of different shapes front and rear, and the geometry is kept on file, so a repeat order comes out identical. Parts made to individual dimensions are collected in the made-to-order products section.
PolyPro is a manufacturer, not a reseller: the moulds, the casting line and the dimensional control are our own, so the part is sold without intermediary mark-ups and a repeat order arrives with the same geometry. Retail is by the piece: if one mounting point has to be closed, the pad is sold separately, with no forced kit. Non-standard items made from a drawing, a sample or a worn part are produced from a single piece.
Wholesale is for garages, auto parts shops, fleets and resellers: the partner programme gives bonuses for turnover or for the volume of a single order, access to prices and stock, and shipment under the partner's own brand. The products are covered by a warranty, with delivery across Ukraine and international shipping.
They belong to the same family of parts and the names are used loosely. A pad usually means the loop or plate with two holes that the pipe hangs on, while the wider group of exhaust mounts also covers clamps, rings and bracket inserts. If you are not sure which shape you have, go by the measured dimensions rather than by the name used in a seller's catalogue.
The number of hanging points depends on the length and the mass of the system: passenger cars normally have several — near the resonator, in the middle run and at the silencer. The exact count is visible from underneath: every hook on the body with a matching pin on the pipe is one mount. Replacing them together is sensible, because they wear out at a similar rate.
Yes, provided the mounting dimensions match: hole centre distance, hole diameter, thickness and body shape. The polyurethane part goes into the same standard brackets with no modification. What changes is the behaviour — it stretches less under the weight of the system and holds the clearance to the body longer, but absorbs fine vibration slightly less.
The pad sits on a bracket that is offset from the hot zone rather than on the pipe itself, so it works at moderate temperatures. Trouble starts when the part touches the pipe because neighbouring mounts have sagged or the geometry was chosen wrongly. After fitting, check the clearances along the whole system both cold and after the engine has warmed up.
The load moves to the neighbouring mounts and brackets: they start to crack, and then cracks appear in the welded seams and in the pipe itself. A sagging system can touch the body, the floor pan or the spare wheel, which means knocking and local overheating. Repairing the pipe costs far more than a mount, so a torn pad is replaced straight away.
Take the old part off and measure the hole centre distance, the hole diameter, the thickness and the width of the body. If the old pad is stretched or torn, take the dimensions from the brackets on the body and the pipe instead. Then compare the shape — loop, ring or plate — and pick the hardness for the mass of the system. The Shore value is given in the product card.
Yes, retail works by the piece: if only one mounting point needs replacing, there is no need to take a kit. In practice pads wear evenly, so mechanics usually renew every hanging point at once, which removes skew and the extra load on neighbouring brackets. Non-standard sizes are also produced from a single piece.
Wholesale is available to garages, auto parts shops, fleets and resellers. The partner programme offers bonuses for turnover or for the volume of a single order, access to current prices and stock levels, and shipment under the partner's own brand. Terms are agreed individually after a request.
