A tie rod boot is a conical sleeve that fits over the ball pin of the steering rod and seals the joint: it holds the grease inside the housing and keeps water, sand and de-icing salt away from the bearing surfaces. It is fitted to steering rods on cars, crossovers, vans and trucks, where the joint works with every steering input and every bump. PolyPro moulds these sleeves in-house and lists the full range in the catalogue.
The part is shaped like a truncated cone or a bell with several folds. The narrow opening grips the ball pin tightly below its taper, while the wide base seats on the joint housing and is held by a spring ring, a shoulder on the housing or a clamp. The folds let the sleeve follow the pin as it swings in every direction without pulling off its seat.
Unlike a boot on a damper rod, this assembly is sealed: there is grease inside working between the pin and its bearing under high pressure. While the sleeve is intact the grease stays in the housing and dirt stays out. As soon as a crack appears, water washes the grease away, grit gets in and the rod develops play within a few thousand kilometres. A steering end boot works the same way, but its fitting sizes are different.
Check the sleeve on a lift or over a pit together with the usual steering play inspection: rock the rod by hand and feel the boot all the way round.
If the sleeve has only cracked and the grease is still in place, the joint is usually saved by fitting a new boot after washing it out and packing fresh grease. If water and sand have already got in, the pin is worn — then the play is measured and the rod itself replaced if needed.
A rubber boot on the rod ages the same way every time: ozone, road salt and wash chemicals harden the material, and the folds that flex constantly crack along the bends. In the cold that rubber loses its flexibility and tears at the first full turn of the wheel. Polyurethane stays workable over a wider temperature range and is not attacked by de-icing agents.
The second difference is how the part behaves on its seat. A polyurethane collar grips the pin and the housing more tightly, so the sleeve does not slide down or rotate, and its wall does not chafe through against nearby parts. The material is firmer than rubber, though, so it needs accurate sizing: too small an opening stretches the boot and splits a fold, too large a one lets water in. Shore hardness is listed on each product page.
Boots are selected by joint dimensions, not by vehicle badge: the same model can leave the factory with rods from different suppliers. Measure the old part and compare the figures with the product pages.
Four figures are needed: the diameter of the top opening that sits on the ball pin, the inner diameter of the base where it seats on the joint housing, the outside diameter of that base and the overall height of the sleeve. Take them with a caliper from the removed part, and check the top opening against the pin right under the taper, which is where the sleeve actually seals. If the old part has crumbled away, measure the rod directly: the pin diameter under the boot and the diameter of the seating band on the housing. Write the figures down on the spot: once the part is off, the folds straighten unevenly and a repeat measurement is often a millimetre or two out.
A softer grade follows the swing of the pin more easily and goes onto its seat without special tools, which makes it the logical choice for a passenger car used mainly in town. A firmer sleeve holds its seat more tightly and stands up better to stone strikes and de-icing chemicals, so it is the one to take for rough roads, trucks and commercial vehicles. The Shore value for every part is listed on its product page, so the options can be compared straight from the catalogue. For machinery working on gravel roads and on sites the extra hardness is justified, while on a city car it only makes the sleeve harder to push onto the pin during fitting.
Look at what actually holds the sleeve on the joint housing. The common arrangements are a seat with a groove for a spring ring, a seat that locks behind a shoulder on the housing, and a base clamped with a metal or plastic band. This decides the shape of the base: a ring needs a groove, a clamp needs a plain cylindrical band. Fitting a boot with a different retention type is a poor idea, because it will either not seal or pull off at the first full turn of the wheel. Check the retainer itself as well: a stretched spring ring or a bent clamp will not seal even with a new sleeve, so they are replaced together with the boot.
The height of the sleeve has to match the distance from the joint housing to the taper of the pin. Too short and it will be stretched before it reaches the seat; too tall and it folds up like a concertina, rubs against the rod and wears through on one side. Consider the shape as well, cone, bell or a bellows with several waves, and the clearance around the joint, since a control arm, a subframe or a shield often runs close by. If a heat shield or a splash guard runs close by, take a sleeve with a smaller outside diameter, otherwise the wall wears through against the neighbouring part before the folds do. Odd shapes are made to order from a sample.
PolyPro is a manufacturer: our own moulds, our own casting shop and dimensional control on every batch. For a steering rod boot that matters more than anything, because the seal depends on the accuracy of the pin opening and of the seat on the housing. We sell direct, both per piece at retail and in bulk: a retail customer gets the one part they need without markups, while workshops and shops get the same sizes repeating from order to order.
If the boot you need is not in the catalogue, we make it to a drawing, a sample or a worn part, starting from one piece. Workshops, parts shops, fleets and resellers can use the partner programme. The products carry a warranty and we ship internationally.
They are different parts of the same steering assembly. The end boot sits on the ball pin of the outer end, which bolts to the steering knuckle, while this one seals the joint of the rod itself. Their seating diameters and heights do not match, so each has to be chosen separately from actual measurements of your own assembly.
It is not advisable. Grease washes out through the split and water and sand get in, so the pin and its bearing run on abrasive and quickly develop play. Knocking from the steering follows, the wheel feels vague and the car wanders in ruts. A boot costs far less than a rod, so replace it as soon as the split is found.
Yes. Unlike a damper boot, this assembly runs with lubricant inside. Before fitting, wash the old grease and dirt out of the joint, check it for play and pack it with fresh grease rated for the high pressure between the pin and its bearing. Only then seat the sleeve and secure it with the ring or the clamp.
That depends on conditions: salted roads, frequent pressure washing and rough tracks shorten the life of any boot. Polyurethane does not harden in the cold and does not craze from ozone, so under the same conditions it outlasts rubber. The usual cause of an early failure is not the material but stone damage or an inaccurate fit on the seat.
You need the diameter of the top opening for the pin, the seating diameter on the joint housing and the height of the sleeve. Take the figures with a caliper from the old part or from the rod itself. If you do not have them, use the boot selection page and send us the dimensions or a photo.
If the rod was unscrewed or the lock nut of the end was released to fit the boot, the angles must be checked on an alignment rack. Even a small change in rod length upsets the toe setting, and that goes straight into tyre wear and handling. If the joint was not disturbed and the boot was changed in place, no adjustment is needed.
Yes, retail per piece is normal for us and there is no minimum order: take one part for one specific rod. If the size or the shape you need is not in the catalogue, we will make a non-standard boot to a drawing, a sample or a worn part, again starting from one piece. The products carry a warranty and we ship internationally.
Workshops, parts shops, fleets and resellers are served through the partner programme: bonuses for turnover or for the size of a single order, access to prices and stock levels, and shipment under the partner brand. Send us the part list and the volumes and we will quote the terms.
