Polyurethane Steering Components by PolyPro

Polyurethane Steering Components

Steering components are the parts that carry the effort from the wheel to the road wheels through the rack, the tie rods and the ends, and the accuracy of the response depends on how the rack is supported. The polyurethane parts in this section deal with that support: the bushings that locate the shaft in the housing and hold the housing on the body, removing the play that causes knocking and a vague centre. PolyPro casts them in house; the other groups are in the catalogue.

What the Steering System Is and How It Works

Most passenger cars use a rack and pinion: turning the wheel converts into the lengthwise travel of a toothed rack, which turns the road wheels through the tie rods and their ends. For that travel to be precise, the rack has to be held in its housing and on the body without play, yet still able to take up thermal clearances and subframe deflection. Bushings and mounts do that job — elastic elements that keep the shaft and the housing in a defined position.

The load here reverses constantly: every steering input changes the direction of the effort, and over bumps the impact from the wheel travels back through the tie rod into the rack. Once the elastic element is worn out, free play appears: the car needs constant small corrections to hold a line, and expansion joints produce a knock around the bulkhead. This kind of play cannot be adjusted out — the worn part is replaced.

Signs of Worn Steering Components

A worn steering assembly is usually heard before the play can be seen. Check it with the car standing still: a helper rocks the wheel through a small angle while you keep a hand on the rack housing and on the tie rods.

  • a knock around the bulkhead over small bumps and expansion joints
  • free play at the wheel that needs constant correction
  • a vague centre: the car will not hold a straight line at speed
  • kickback and vibration through the wheel over potholes
  • the rack housing shifted against the subframe, worn seats
  • steering effort that changes unevenly through the travel

Sealing is checked separately: a split steering rack boot lets water and grit reach the shaft, after which both the shaft and the bushings wear. Protective parts are therefore inspected together with the bushings.

Polyurethane or Rubber in Steering Bushings

Standard rubber parts are chosen mainly for comfort: they damp small impacts well, but under reversing loads they lose shape quickly, and oil, road chemicals and temperature swings speed the ageing up. A worn rubber bushing allows free movement, and the play grows non-linearly: the larger the clearance, the harder the blows on the seats around it.

Polyurethane is firmer and resists abrasion better, so the rack stays tightly located for longer and the response becomes more predictable — the car holds a line better and the centre is sharper. The trade-off is that some of the fine road vibration reaches the wheel more clearly. A softer grade suits everyday road use, a firmer one loaded or competition use; the Shore value is stated in the product card of each item.

How to Choose Steering Components

Selection starts from the specific part and its dimensions, not from the name of the assembly. First find what is actually worn, then take the measurements and pick the hardness.

By Assembly and Part Type

Start by locating the play: in the fit of the shaft inside the rack housing, in the mounting of the housing to the subframe, or already in the tie rods and their ends. A knock when the wheel is rocked with the car stationary usually points at the rack fit, while impacts over bumps point at the housing mounts. The polyurethane items in this section cover exactly those supports: begin with the steering rack bushing section and match the part by dimensions. It is also worth checking the neighbouring parts — subframe mounts and anti-roll bar bushings — because their wear sounds similar and new rack bushings alone will not cure it.

By Dimensions and Fit

The main figures are the inner diameter for the shaft or bolt, the outer diameter of the seat and the length of the bushing. If the old part is badly worn, take the dimensions from the rack housing and the shaft rather than from the worn surface, otherwise the inner diameter will come out oversized. Check separately for a shoulder or a flange and for locating grooves — parts with identical diameters often differ exactly there. Before pressing, clean the seat of burrs and of the remains of the old bushing, otherwise the part will go in skewed. The fit should be tight but not over-pressed, or steering effort will rise.

By Durometer

Hardness sets the balance between steering precision and comfort. For daily city and highway driving a softer grade is the sensible choice: it keeps the rack located without passing every small road input to the wheel. For loaded vehicles, towing, rough roads and track use a firmer grade makes sense — play appears later and the response is sharper, though vibration is more noticeable. For mixed use start from a middle grade. After the job, check free play at the wheel with the car stationary and then how the car tracks straight at road speed. The Shore value is given in the product card.

Why Buy Steering Components from PolyPro — Retail and Wholesale

PolyPro makes its polyurethane parts itself: our own moulds, our own casting line and dimensional control at the end of it. That means repeatable batches and sales without intermediaries, and for the customer the option of ordering a single part instead of a kit. If an item is not in the standard range, it is made from a drawing, a sample or the worn part from one piece — a common case for steering assemblies, where bushing dimensions differ even within one platform.

Wholesale is aimed at garages, auto parts shops, fleets and resellers. The partner programme gives bonuses for turnover or for the volume of a single order, access to prices and stock, and shipment under the partner's own brand. The products carry a warranty, with delivery across Ukraine and international shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which steering components are available in polyurethane?

This section covers the supporting elements that work in compression and shear: the bushings that locate the steering rack and hold its housing. Moving joints with metal-to-metal contact, such as tie rod ends, are not replaced with polyurethane. If the item you need is not in the standard range, the part can be produced from a drawing or a sample.

Is a knock in the steering always the rack?

No. Worn anti-roll bar bushings, tie rod ends and strut mounts produce a similar sound. Localise the assembly before replacing anything: a helper rocks the wheel with the car stationary while you place a hand in turn on the rack housing, the tie rods and the bar bushings. The part where the impact is felt is the source of the noise.

Do polyurethane bushings make the steering heavier?

Not noticeably, provided the fit is chosen correctly. Effort rises when a bushing is pressed in with excessive interference or when the seat is fitted dry. A correctly sized part removes the play without clamping the shaft: the response gets sharper while the effort stays close to standard.

What does changing rack bushings to polyurethane give?

A tighter location of the shaft and the housing: free play disappears, the car holds a straight line better and the centre becomes more defined. Service life is longer than with a rubber equivalent thanks to abrasion resistance and tolerance of oil and road salt. The trade-off is that fine road vibration reaches the wheel slightly more clearly.

Should boots be replaced together with the bushings?

If a boot is split or hardened, yes. Water, sand and salt reach the shaft through the tear, and a new bushing will wear out in a short time. Since the assembly is already open, it makes sense to renew the protective parts during the same job rather than dismantling everything a second time.

Can a bushing be made from a sample?

Yes. A dimensioned drawing, an intact part as a sample or even the worn one will do: the inner and outer diameters, the length and the profile are restored from it. This is the usual route for rare cars, trucks and rebuilt vehicles where the original item is no longer listed anywhere. Production starts from a single piece.

Can I buy one bushing instead of a kit?

Yes, retail works by the piece: if one support is worn, there is no need to take a full set. In practice paired elements wear at the same rate, so during a rack repair they are usually replaced together, otherwise a new part works against a worn one and uses up its life faster. Non-standard items are also made from one piece.

What are the wholesale terms for garages and shops?

Wholesale is open to garages, auto parts shops, fleets and resellers. The partner programme provides bonuses for turnover or for the volume of a single order, access to current prices and stock levels, and shipment under the partner's own brand. Terms are agreed individually after a request.
